Private Health Insurance Question

Hi Folks,

I’ve been with Aetna (and its previous incarnations) for years now (almost 20). I was just notified that they will no longer be offering health insurance renewals in Japan. They seem to have made a deal with Allianz, who will pick up the option for those who want to renew. The quote is similar to what I was paying before.

My policy is in US dollars, which means it’ll be much more expensive this year anyway. Does anybody have any reasonable Japan based options for health insurance for us long term gaijins?

Cheers

  1. Just use normal Japanese health insurance like everyone else? Why are you paying for an overseas insurance provider?

  2. Unless you’re SOFA you need to be on NHI. You’re also going to be getting hit with back payments unless you know, SOFA. I suggest going down to the local city hall and getting signed up and prepare to pay your back payments.

If you’re SOFA they should help you if you need insurance.

Also sure hope you’re up to date on your pension, they’re getting more and more people now with the mynumber.

  3. I was using Viva Vida but I recently switched to the National Health Insurance because I thought it’d be worth it if I’m going to be here for the long-term.

I have pay one and a half years worth of back payments.
