Driving school in Tokyo

I have not driven any cars before but I want to get a license now. Driving camp is not an option for me since I have a full time job.

I’m having trouble choosing between a designated school or non-designated one and between getting it in english or in japanese.

My japanese is above conversational but i read like a 10-year-old. Lol. Hope you guys can help me decide.

  1. Go with the designated one, it will help with the whole process and you don’t need to do the practical test with the police. The practical test will be done by the instructor from the school instead.

  2. I did mine with Hinomaru DS in Meguro.

Don’t sweat the Japanese too much, you will get used to the vocabulary and kanjis real fast. The set of possible questions is not so big, after taking a few practice tests, I basically had most of the questions memorized and passed each test on the first try.

  3. I just got my driving license from zero here a few weeks back.

I used Koyama driving school and got my driving license from start to finish in around 3 months with courses mostly on the weekends. They offer courses completely in English if you don’t speak Japanese, although the English course is a bit more expensive.

They also have options for them to schedule the entire process from start to finish for you as long as you provide a list of available days and time. It costs a bit more, but you don’t have to go through the hassle of booking each and every lesson.

I opted to take the entire driving course in Japanese and let them set the schedule, and bought an extra copy of the study material in English just in case, but I never really used it.
In the end it set me back around 40万, but well worth the money more the smooth and stress less experience.
