How do you improve listening besides just ‘listen more’?

Ok, I’ve tried to listen more and it’s not working as I like it too, I will continue listening more but I need a game plan. Please help me with this.

I downloaded a playlist on youtube and listened to it for a whole month. Everything raw, I can hear the sounds abit clearer now??? But comprehension is not intuitive and very low, like maybe 10-20%. I then rewatched the playlist with subs and my comprehension skyrocketed. I knew almost every word and could follow along with what they are saying. My reading abilities are way higher then my non existent listening skil; and so how do I fix this? I don’t think raw listening will help as my comprehension is so low that everything they say goes over my head and my mind starts to wonder.

When watching with subs, my eyes are like glued to the subs so I’m worried I’m no longer listening

  1. It sounds like to me you’re doing it the wrong way round. First, watch a video with subs, then later watch it again without subs. The second time you already know what they’re saying so you can try to listen with intent to work out what you know is coming. Of course, you won’t have it memorised, so you still have to listen.

Then after doing this with a few episodes, you can try one without the subtitles first, listen intently, rewinding as many times as you want, lower the speed, whatever… Then watch it with subtitles afterwards to see what you heard, and what you missed.

It’s the great thing about video/audio. Live conversations are fun but people just go and if you miss it, it’s gone, but you’re in control here, so actively use it.
