Hi! I plan on flying to Japan (visa permitting) for 19 days from mid-December to early-January.
Main non-negotiables is to have a good view of Urban and small-town Japan in freezing temperatrues, and hopefully blanketed in Snow.
Kyoto (4 days) — Entering Japan through Kyoto to get a good vibe of old Japan and its culture., I also plan on doing Day Trips to Shirakawa-Go to experience the well-loved town.
Hokkaido (5 Days) — staying in Sapporo for most of the time as i’m not big on winter sports but plan on making Day Trips to Otaru and Hokadate to see the Canal (Otaru) and the Mt Hakodate view
Tokyo (7 days) — will be staying in Tokyo Station to be in close proximity to public transpo but also, the cheapest accommodation I could find. No specific plans for this, just excited to get lost.
For Input (3 days) — I have 3 days free in between Hokkaido and Tokyo that I want to spend in a less urban setting, or at least less-so compared to the former three. I am considering Takayama, Nagano, or Akita as I’ve heard great things for them in the winter but open to other recommendations that will give me a good winter experience!
Thanks!

Most of ‘old Japan’ in Kyoto is long gone: it’s a sprawling modern city
