Does anyone have experience working in a bicycle shop in Japan?

I’m wanting to live in Japan with the 1 year working holiday visa, my japanese is coming along but still not strong. I’m a full on manager/bike mechanic at a bike store in Canada. I want to live in Tokyo with my gf, so I’m hoping that bike shops would be open to an English/French speaking employee to fix the bikes and talk to tourist customers for the rental bikes. Anyone have any experience with this?

  1. I’ve no experience but I went over to TownWork, filtered by Tokyo, and punched in “自転車修理” – [https://townwork.net/joSrchRsltList/?ac=041&fw=%E8%87%AA%E8%BB%A2%E8%BB%8A%E4%BF%AE%E7%90%86](https://townwork.net/joSrchRsltList/?ac=041&fw=%E8%87%AA%E8%BB%A2%E8%BB%8A%E4%BF%AE%E7%90%86)

It only found 3 hits, which I found pretty surprising. There are tons of bike shops around, but I guess the cycling community is large enough that they are able to hire from within rather than posting for jobs. Or maybe I searched for the wrong term.

If you want that sort of work you’re probably going to have to hit the pavement and look for it.

    Good luck!

  2. Since you’ll be on a WH visa you shouldn’t have too many problems. I assume that the pay would be close to minimum wage. That’s probably the biggest downside. There are a few guys in Kyushu who used to run cycling tours for foreign visitors. Maybe you could find a similar company in Tokyo.
