Intermittent dehumidifier option with a typical aircon unit?

My in-laws have a mountain house that I get to use sometimes since they’re getting on in years, but I often come back to it finding mold throughout the house. The black dots in the bathroom, white fuzzy stuff on doors and furniture, and this last time my shoes and hat were covered in growths.
I’m wondering if it’s possible to leave the aircon on with some timer or intermittent setting that will help keep the place drier but not cost too much in terms of monthly electricity costs. Anyone have experience with something like this?

  1. If it doesn’t have a built-in function, maybe you can plug it into one of those timer socket adapters.

Not sure how well the machine would appreciate its power being cut off and restored abrubtly though.

Either way this is a “some hours every day” option.

  2. What you need is a Daikin Karaie 「カライエ JKT10VS-W」. It will automatically regulate the humidity in the house. It was a game changer for our cottage house in Fukushima. With some luck you can find it cheaper on mercari.

  3. Does your mountain home have wifi? A cheap pocket wifi may also work. If so you can buy a simple IR blaster that will let you check the temp and humidity from an app, as well as control the air con through the same app. You can do it manually or even set up simple automations. I use nature remo and it’s been fantastic. I mainly use it to prep the air con before I return home if I’ve been away a while, so home is at the temp I want when I step in the door. Also nice to check in on the humidity during rainy season or summer.
