Is it appropriate to wear short leggings in japan?

So I bought some legging shorts for summer and was wondering if it would be appropriate to wear them when I go out (with an overside top).

  1. If by “appropriate” you’re looking to blend in, I would say it depends where you are. Take a look at what the people around you/your age are wearing in public if you’re worried about sticking out.

  2. Sure. I wear leggings with an oversized t-shirt all the time in the summer. Just gotta check that they pass the squat test (aka don’t go sheer when you bend over).

  3. Do you mean like cycle shorts? How short are they? And well it depends really. Athleisure clothing is not a thing in Japan… and definitely leggings are not seen as bottoms on their own. People would probably assume you’re off hiking or going to the gym as you’ll look very very casual

Wearing leggings under a dress is fine, as pants is well… foreign. If you do go for it, definitely cover your booty and lady flower with an oversize top as you said!

  4. I wear them sometimes. You might stand out or get looks but you get that anyway as a foreigner. Who cares. Wear what you want as long as it’s not breaking decency laws or something

  5. you can wear whatever you want, but if its not what other people wear you will definetely get several looks.

  6. Here’s my take, as an American who used to wear low-cut tops but gave them away before coming to Japan because she thought they would be “inappropriate” and now ***HATES*** all of the clothing she owns here:

If you are conspicuously foreign here then you will always be “wrong” no matter what, so wear what you want.

  7. You can wear whatever you want in Japan. It just depends *how* and *where* you wear it.

My neighborhood izakaya mama-san wears leggings with linen or drapey jersey tunic tops (hems hit mid thigh or mid calf) all the time. She looks classy.

  8. You can wear whatever you want in Japan. There’s no dress code here. If you’re obviously foreign looking, you’re going to get stared at no matter how you dress, so don’t worry about it. No, short leggings aren’t going to blend in here, but you’re not going to blend in here anyway.

  9. I don’t adjust what I wear between countries that much. I wear leggings as pants a lot, with a top that covers at least some of my crotch and butt (something I do everywhere, just what I’m comfortable with). I don’t feel like I get any more or less weird looks than when I wear more modest clothing like long skirts/dresses. I’m half Japanese and I’ve had people look at me funny my whole life here. Aside from my face I don’t look that different from Japanese women (short, thin, black hair although mine is wavy but I got that from my Japanese mom lol). I think if your face or other features don’t look like everyone else you will get stared at no matter what. Might as well wear what you enjoy.
