**Have you always wanted to improve your Japanese, but felt like you have reached a plateau?** Then you’ll love these 2 websites that enable you to read Japanese novels for free!
A lot of the advanced learners on this sub probably know about these websites, but reading Japanese still doesn’t get enough attention on here. The websites I’m talking about are:
– https://kakuyomu.jp/ (Kakuyomu – write/read)
– https://yomou.syosetu.com/ (Shousetsuka ni narou – Let’s become a novelist)
These two sites are the leading 二次創作 websites. Japanese people write and publish web novels on there as a hobby. **Through reading web novels, you’ll gain a better understanding of Japanese sentence structure, grammar & vocabulary**. The first month of reading will be hard. But once you get into the habit of reading one to a few chapters every day for several weeks to months you’ll feel your ability skyrocketing! It doesn’t matter what your goal is, you’ll benefit from daily reading. And not only **your Japanese reading skill will improve**, but you’ll likely come across some **great and exciting stories** that will make you want to read even more.
So, why should you make use of Kakuyomu and shousetsuka ni narou? Here are the most important advantages summarised:
1. It’s **free**
2. You have well over a **million stories** to choose from covering a wide variety of genres
3. You’re able to **read anywhere** & can also read on your phone
4. Through reading in the browser, you can also use the chrome extension **yomichan** on these websites, which enables you to **look up unknown words instantly** (available for desktop devices & android devices with kiwi browser)
5. The **chapters are often quite short**: Most chapters are between 3,000-8,000 Japanese characters, which equals around 10-20 pages in a normal book
6. Kakuyomu and shousetsuka ni narou enable you to **develop a daily reading habit**. In the beginning, you might be able to read one chapter 2-3 days, but after getting used to reading and improvement in your Japanese ability you’ll find yourself easily reading 1-2 chapters every day
You might already know some web novels published on kakuyomu and narou. A lot of web novels from there get published as light novels and sometimes even get an anime or manga adaptation, if they are popular enough.
Here are some of the most famous works from kakuyomu & narou, all of them have an anime adaptation. In addition to that, there are millions of other stories with various difficulties waiting for you!:

Thanks a lot for this post! I have somehow completely missed these 2 sites.
Man, Japanese YA audiences really love a story where they live inside a heavily systematized fantasy world they can gamebreak, huh
Any recommendations on the first story to read as a beginner?
Two great resources perfect for intermediate and advanced learners!
For those who have just started with Japanese I can recommend these [free beginner reading resources](https://dokushoclub.com/free-reading-resources/n5-free-reading-resources/) to work their way up to those two.
Sounds wonderful I’ll check it out
