Can someone relate?

When I’m watching japanese YouTube videos and don’t read the subtitles I understand way less! It makes me insecure to think about how little I’m able to pick up when just listening 🙁

Side note: I’m suuper grateful that a lot of Japanese YouTubers take the time to write subtitles! It must take up a lot of time yet they do it so often which is useful especially for learners!

  1. Japanese television shows and YouTube content made for native speakers often includes subtitles. Native speakers need them sometimes, so stop being so hard on yourself.

  2. I’d say this is a normal step the learning process. Same happened to me when learning English, I **needed** subs to understand. Nowdays this is not the case anymore, and using subs helped my tons to get where I am now.

You should try to watch easier stuff without subs so your brain can start to assimilate stuff without subs. It’ll be a bit hard at first but eventually you’ll start to recognize more things. But don’t think about subs as a bad thing. They also help you improve!

  3. Bro I can’t understand English sometimes without subtitles and my English level should be similar to a native speaker.

Pat yourself on the back, you have reached a point (being able to understand YouTubers/television programs) that many could only dream about. Just keep pushing!

  4. I use subtitles for English shows and it’s my native language. Nothing to worry about, my dude.

  5. Yep, this is me. You just have to slowly transition into not using them to improve. Try watching shows with subtitles, then watch them again without. Good luck.
