Hello!
I worked as an ALT in Japan in 2020-2021, then returned back home to take care of family stuff. Now that everything is settled, I’m thinking of potentially returning to Japan and maybe being an ALT again. That said, I know that after a year you start getting taxed since they now have a previous income to go on(last year’s). Does anyone know if I were to come back next year, 2023, would they use my income from 2020-2021 for taxes or would I have another year of no taxes? It’s fine if I would be, I just want to factor that in for budgeting purposes haha. Thanks in advance and sorry to bother!

It’s not that you have a year of no taxes, its that you pay your taxes in arrears. When leaving you’re meant to nominate a tax representative and leave some cash behind so that your tax representative can pay the taxes you owe on your behalf.
If you didn’t pay any taxes for the time you were in Japan and didn’t nominate a tax representative when you left, then you’ll probably find that tax bill waiting for you along with some late payment penalties applied.
But at least you won’t owe any money for the time you weren’t living in Japan.
