Yes. The immigration officer had this tube shaped scanner attached to the front of his trousers and I was asked to put my index fingers on them.
Apparently, there was some discussion of it, before someone had a lightbulb moment and mentioned that Japanese citizens can (and some even do) vote, and might not take kindly to being treated like they were down the police station when re-entering their own country.
Foreigners of course can’t vote, so it is of no consequence if they feel like they are treated as criminals.
Nope. Special permanent residents (特別永住権 holders) also are not.
I understand scanning fingerprints the first time, but doing it every time seems excesive.
