Do geishas normally sleep with their clients?

This may seem a dumb question, and it probably is, but every time I hear something about it, I get different opinions.

So, I read a japanese guy online saying that geishas are just like expensive prostitutes, sort of. I also read another japanese saying that they only loose their virginity once, but after that they absolutely don’t have sex with their clients and suggesting that is very offensive. While foreigners seem to think geisha is just a japanese term for prostitute.

I know geishas are well educated women who studied and know a lot about culture and art. But after playing their songs in dinners and dancing and stuff. Do they often sleep with their clients or not? Is it a known fact? Or does that never happen?
Or maybe it’s not directly intended, but the client flirts, she likes it, and they end up doing it?

(I’m referring to nowadays geishas, not the ones from the edo period or in between)

  1. Short answer: no. They’re just entertainers.

While I’m sure some some geisha have slept with clients, that would be like assuming that all sales reps sleep with clients after making a deal.

If you’re really interested in geisha culture and history beyond what pop culture says, look into the books by Liza Dalby. She’s an anthropologist and was invited to train with geiko/maiko as part of her research work.

  2. Geishas, real estate agents, recruiters, bar hostesses, maid cafe ladies, all of them do the teabagging if the price is right, and the situation calls for it.

The girls who do this realize they can make a lot of money that way.>! They are most-likely not from a well-off family, and maybe not even a branch family of a reputable family.!<

    >!As foreigners, we don’t much about their class system, but it’s there. The girls who typically occupy such positions don’t come from high class families.!<

  3. Some geishas say they have sexual relations still now, while other geishas deny any such thing is going on today.

  4. Edo period geishas would sleep with their clients even -less- than nowadays. Prostitution was a very, very strictly controlled business. Geishas could be called by entertainment houses, but the prostitution part was left to courtesans. Sleeping with a client was a tremendously bad idea and Memoirs of a Geisha is bullshit mixing a lot of different things.
