Becoming an exchange student while Japanese

I was thinking of doing half a year or so in a Japanese high school next year but I’m not sure how to go about it as I intend to go without the support of an exchange student program.
The reason why being that I am half Japanese and therefore own a citizenship plus my mother and family lives there so I wouldn’t need a host family.
However I don’t know how to get into a public school in second year. I know they have entrance exams there but would I be considered foreign or native? And are they going to give me a first year test? Is it even possible to enter in the second year?

I’ve checked in with one private high school and they say it’s possible but honestly I would rather it be a public school so as to not burden my parents financially that much. Any info is greatly appreciated. I know I should be asking my family but tbh they aren’t really being helpful… Also I can speak fluently but have elementary level reading skills (N3 maybe) so it causes some difficulty when it comes to reading non-international school websites.

For context I would be moving to Yokohama.

  1. Pick a highschool and reach out to them directly (as you did with the private school). If you wanted to do the whole three years you’d be a returnee, but for just 6 months it would almost certainly be a case-by-case thing.
