  1. Well companies don’t buy companies and do nothing with them. Some changes will happen. Maybe if you research the new owners you might get an idea.

  2. Big international funds are moving their investments to Japan now that the Chinese shut down the private school industry and all the funding there drained out. Expect to see big western investment funds buy all kinds of things up. Wouldn’t surprise me if a big eikaiwa got bought out by Blackrock.

  3. Old timers at my Berlitz school in Tokyo seem to be disturbed by the sale of Berlitz, whereas new teachers seem to be confident everything will be just fine and even improve. Apparently Berlitz made a loss for two full years. Benesse the parent company funded them through this time but I guess they now prefer to sell it off. Can’t imagine nothing will change at berlitz. Any thoughts on what could change?

  4. Hmm. Berlitz always had a bunch of issues. The teaching salary for one has been going down across eikaiwa chains for the last 20-ish years. Not sure it will make much of difference from the teaching side.

  5. I’m on a team in Berlitz that worked closely on various Benesse projects. The news of the reacquisition was quite shocking for most of us at company headquarters. In fact, changes were already happening within Berlitz subsidiaries in preparation for the sale, which I believe were meant to make the deal more attractive.

The teams that we corresponded with at Benesse were also saddened to hear the news even though we would continue to work together.
