Traveling as a pescatarian. Suggestions?

Any suggestions for traveling as a pescatarian in Japan for 3 weeks?

I primarily eat a vegetarian diet, but once in awhile I’ll eat American sushi (like a rainbow roll or California roll). In-general I like to minimize my consumption of seafood. I understand that fish in some form ends up in a LOT of Japanese cuisine though. I’m not going to order a plate of fish, but if bonito flakes are put on my rice it’s fine while I’m traveling.

  1. Usually you won’t get bonito flake on your rice unless you buy some furikake that include bonito.

But yes, dashi, that is a broth made from fish or katsuobushi, it present in a lot of dish, including broth and dipping sauce for soba and udon. So unless you go to a strictly vegan/vegetarian restaurant, it might be harder than you think to avoid dashi.

It should not be too difficult to find things to eat if you are ok with the use of fish in the stock and maybe eating small amount of fish and seafood. Maybe as a backup get happy cow app to find vegetarian restaurant.

Note that Japanese sushi have nothing to do with American one, like there is just a few simple rolls and most of it is nigiri, so fish on top or rice.
