Looked around on the various municipal sites but answers were vague at best.
Me and fiancé will be getting married soon and she plans on taking my last name.
My last name is technically two words, like “De Angelo” for example.
My official name is and will remain in Romaji of course, and I have used various different variations when writing or registering using Katakana, with most omitting the space or adding removing a ー or a ッfor example.
We are planning on agreeing on a spelling without a space which I don’t think we will have much trouble registering (for example my pension omits the space) and then I’ll probably also register my カタカナ表記 officially finally to match and then change any straggling accounts with rogue spellings.
My main question, since her official name will now be Katakana, I think the only “official” instance of her name in Romaji will be her passport, and I think this should actually be better to match my English name exactly and have a space. Has anyone experienced or know how easy/lenient it is when converting the official Katakana name back into Romaji for the passport? Is it it as simple as If she brings my passport/ID to show will there be any pushback in registering the name with a space in it to match mine or will they try to register the English name without a space to match the Katakana?
