Want to hear your thoughts about Rakuten Mobile’s Iphone upgrade program

As per the title says. Your opinion and experiences for their iphone upgrade program

Edit to describe the campaign:
The program is iphone upgrade program with 48x installment if you pay by rakuten credit card.
And after you finished the 24x installment payment, you can choose either
1. Sstop the installment and return the phone (basically phone leasing with 50% of the phone’s price)
2. Continue the installment, and you can upgrade the phone to the latest one between 25x – 47x installment period. After the 48x installment done. The phone is basically yours

  1. If it’s anything like the offer by docomo/au where you get the phone on 36 months installments then after 24 months you can turn it in for an upgrade, skipping the rest of the payments then well, it works.

you get a phone you don’t really “own” but you can upgrade it every two years.

  2. It’s about the same as Softbank’s upgrade program. We update our iPhones every two years under that plan. We just went from an iPhone 12 Pro Max to an iPhone 14 Pro Max. I suppose it’s really more like leasing an iPhone than buying one but who wants an old iPhone?

  3. Pretty much as you described it. If you’re the type of person who likes to upgrade your phone frequently and you don’t want to spend like 150,000 yen in one go then it’s a convenient option.

Hard to say whether it’s an objectively “good deal” without knowing the initial (if any) costs and monthly fees and doing a comparison.

Personally, I just bought an iPhone 14 Pro (coming from an iPhone 6S) outright and plan to keep using it (with one of the cheap sim only plans) until it literally dies on me because I have no interest in upgrading constantly.
