Startup job-offer in Japan – negotiation, remote work

Hey all – have an offer at a startup in Japan in a senior digital marketing position (really excited!).

I am currently based in BKK, curious if anyone has any experience with the below in terms of negotiation and the contract in Japan ie norms.

1. Remote work – my partner has a potential opportunity in Japan, but the coming recession may quash that. Just in case, would like to work from our current location at least some of the time (ideally 30% but at a minimum every other month for a couple weeks). How atypical is this? Should I negotiate to include it in the contract?
2. Job duties – very explicit, like gain $XXX in business in time X. Is this typical? Never seen this before in a contract in other countries
3. Vacation days – negotiable?
4. Relocation – typical? realize this is a startup situation, but just want understand

Appreciate the thoughts; #1 is the most critical point!

  1. 1. Remote work never caught on for most businesses here so it’s not all that common. You do have better odds with a startup, however. It’s 100% essential that you negotiate it immediately if you want it.
    2. It just sounds like relatively inexperienced management to me, and in my (rather limited) experience with marketing contractual expectations, it tends to be percentile metrics as opposed to definitive dollar values. But if you’re experienced in the field you should be able to tell if it is realistic or not.
    3. As in is it possible to negotiate? If so, sure. Similarly to remote work, your odds are better of being able to negotiate these with a startup than an established company. It doesn’t hurt to ask as long as your requests are realistic.
    4. I’m not sure what you mean by this. It’s very typical for companies in foreign countries to ask you to relocate to that country to work from them, yes – if that’s what you’re asking.
