Hi! Soon I’ll be travelling to Tokyo with my white boyfriend, I’m Asian myself. Will he get hit on a lot if we’re travelling together? Has anyone been in a similar situation before? Thank you. I have a lot of self confidence issues.
You’ll be fine. Some Japanese are curious but there are bars to go to for that sort of stuff. If he’s out walking late at night in some areas he may get touts trying to seduce him into a bar (happened to me in Sapporo but not Tokyo). Just don’t follow the touts, it’ll be a messy situation.
You really have nothing to worry about. The general population very much keep to themselves.
In short, no. If you travel to Hokkaido or some other small places, you might occasionally run into people who switch to English (practicing with each other if in a group but really just want to be noticed) . Harmless fun I would think. Obviously, as other poster mentioned, touts will talk/reach out but just ignore them as you walk and nothing happens. This includes not just typical guys trying to pull in customers but also workers for girls bars, host clubs, bar, izakaya, maid cafes, that sort of thing. People are curious however so I would not be surprised if your boyfriend gets some attention but not like romantically. More like, “where are you from???” and having a chance to speak to a “cool foreign guy”
WFT… no… I’ve been to Japan for a year living there and for about 20 weeks of vacation… and I’ve never been hit on. And most of the time I was traveling solo.
Yes, it might attract the attention of some people that might talk to him, kids being excited to see a foreigner, especially in more rural area… but hit on… no.
And what if it happen ? Are you jealous ?
Absolutely not
Thank you all for the replies so far btw. I know it sounds like a stupid question but we previously travelled to a different Asian country before and women were blatantly doing it right in front of me 😕
