Visa problem

Hello dear community!

I have a visa problem and might get insights here on my situation.

Currently I am on a student visa learning in a Japanese language school in Tokyo. I will graduate from the Japanese language school in this December after the maximum 2 years you allowed to study in Japanese language school with student visa.

My visa will expire in Feb 22, 2023.

I accepted to graduate school in Japanese university and the enrollment starting at middle March 2023, studies will begin in April. I already have ‘letter of acceptance’ from the university.

My question is- can I extend my visa from Feb 22 to April?

I need to mention I have already have an apartment contract and a lot of furniture and I will still want to continue to live in it. I have bank account and phone number. I really don’t want to leave behind this status because of gap of few weeks.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks 🙂

  1. Just apply for a new student visa around early feb. You get an automatic 2 month extension of your current visa just for showing up to immigration (they staple a paper in your passport indicating this). Then they should be able to process it by the time your grad school starts.

  2. If your visa expires in February, you can (and should) renew the visa using the University instead of the language school, to save yourself the money. If you renew using the language school, immigration will only give you the minimum you need until you graduate (4 months is the lowest amount).

Thanks to corona, you should be able to stay up to 3 years in a language school as long as the school approves it.

Talk to the university’s foreign student center for the paperwork you need (pages 4 and 5 of the application)
