Masters in Japan

I’m planning to do my master’s in Japan’s top college because I definitly belive what they’ll teach would be far far better than my bachelors in my country but unfortunately I don’t have high GPA (bs of covid and stuff ) so would it be possible to get into tier-1 colleges like UTOKYO or Tohoku Uni based only on the entrance examination?

  1. I don’t know what your country is, but don’t expect much from master degree coursework, since the main focus is research.

Possibly. Each graduate school has its own requirement, so it depend on tons of factor.

  2. I don’t know about UTOKYO but having been to Tohoku University myself, a good GPA for your undergrad isn’t a strict requirement.

To get into Tohoku University, you first need to get in contact with a prospective professor. You will discuss with him/her your research plan, then he/she will formally recommend you to take the entrance exam. Then if you can pass the exam, you are in.

  3. Tohoku uni is great, teachers are wiling to answer any question even after classes.

Plus Sendai is a really chill city, I had a great life there.

Plus people are cool to foreigners.

Plus night life is quite cosy at kokubuncho.

Plus very green city (nickname is “mori no miyako” meaning “the city of trees”).

Biking from north Sendai to aobayama campus everyday gave me steel legs. Now I feel like a lazy boy only walking to job.

  4. Honestly, depending on the program, the teachings themselves will be at a quite high level, but they expect you to do a lot of the note taking and learning by yourself. They will present you will all of the information, but past that the rest is on you. Very few teachers feel like they are present with you, and those teachers are god-sends.

And as some people have already mentioned, when it comes to the Masters program a lot of what you learn will come from your supervisor because much of the program is research based.
They will only ask you to take a few classes so that you can focus much of your energy on the research.

Finally, if you are planning on working in Japan or in somewhere in Asia, then I do recommend getting your masters at UTOKYO. But if you are planning on working anywhere else, I do recommend going to a different university.
