My son flunked his driving test and wants to practice more before retaking it. In most countries it’s okay for the parents to take their kids out to practice in the family car. What’s the law in Japan? I’ve had a full Japanese license for over 10 years.

That is fine.
You can sit with your kid as long as you have had a Japanese license for 1 year provided he has the learner’s permit from the driving school in question.
Teach him the ropes.

If he has the learner’s permit which is the laminated B5 paper from the driving school with his picture, it’s totally fine. NO HIGHWAYS OR EXPRESSWAYS THOUGH!
When I learned from scratch in Japan, the Class 1 driver had to have at least 6 months or 3 years experience. They don’t mention it anymore for some reason.
**Btw, you need the signage that the driving school has to indicate that your kid is a driver in-training.**

I have a feeling that’s not true if you mean taking them on proper roads.

Did he go to a driving school? The way you need to drive to pass the test isn’t intuitive because it isn’t based on real-world driving. It’s extremely difficult to pass without practicing with a driving instructor.

Not most countries, and I highly suggest you don’t do this as you are not licensed instructor. Let the instructors do their jobs so the child learn how to drive properly. You, also have bad habits and your child will copy those as well.
