going to japan for just entrance exam?

I apologize in advance if this isn’t the appropriate sub for my query but has anyone gone to Japan solely for the purpose of writing an entrance exam for their target uni? It’s for a PG course so there’s no alternate universal exams I can take for it.

I just wanted to know if this is common because the university website makes it seem like it’s the only obvious possible route?

I really like this course & it aligns w my career and japan is one of the leaders in my field of study but idk the idea of travelling overseas for an exam that I’m not sure I will pass seems overwhelming and I just want to know if somebody has experience w the same?
