I am of Japanese descent but my Japanese is, to put it lightly, completely atrocious. However recently, I wanted to at least regain some of the knowledge I had as a young lad. While I believe my Japanese is awful, I can somewhat understand basic conversations, and my pronunciation is probably the only thing I’m skilled at. I can’t read or write for shit. I think I might have some grade source resource in the basement and my dad is a native Japanese so he could help me but I do want advice on certain resources I could use as well as any tips for a beginner.

If you go to the About tab in this sub, there’s a Starter’s Guide that should give you a boost. I’d also recommend [this video](https://youtu.be/L1NQoQivkIY) as a good resource overview. General advice is to start by learning to read hiragana and katakana, then move into grammar, vocab, and basic kanji.
Good luck! That’s cool that you’re reconnecting with your roots.
