Uhm… Isn’t it Ctrl+A as well? It’s just when you’re in the middle of text input that you can’t select text, I think. Once you pick a candidate for conversion in the IME (i.e. when the typed text has been converted to a Kanji/Katakana candidate), you can freely select text. Text input is done when it’s no longer underlined.
You can still use Ctrl+A as long as you’re not actively typing a word. If you’re in the middle of a word or haven’t hit enter to confirm whatever you’ve input then it won’t do anything.
