I used to see a lot of great Japanese TV and film on American platforms like Netflix, but now it seems K-dramas dominate screens – what happened to the Japanese TV landscape in America?

I love the Korean TV industry as well, but I really want to see more Japanese shows – why do you think there aren’t as many offerings these days? Am I just not looking in the right places? I absolutely adored Midnight Diner, but I’ve only seen a handful of other Japanese shows/movies with solid production quality, story and acting – Followers, Giri/Haji, Atelier, Naked Director, Alice in Borderland, Tokyo Vice.

It feels like the vast majority of Japanese television on American platforms is anime. Also, I guess it’s important to mention that I grew up in the Takeshi Kitano era of movies, so maybe I’m just not aware of the new places to watch the latest and greatest, lol.

  1. There are a lot of Japanese TV shows on Netflix in Japan. I would expect a lot of them to be in the international list on Netflix in the US.

  2. Decades of nepotism and corruption have taken their toll. Had some friends working in TBS and it basically seemed to have become a product advertisement factory with a sideline in pimping young wanna-be’s to people connected to the industry. All very seedy and shady.

  3. I think it comes in cycles. It seems to flip one way then the other every 6 months or so.
