Pet adoption/ buying by foreigner on work visa

We recently moved to Japan on a 3year work visa. We are looking for adopting a pet (puppy/ kitten), but someone told us that they don’t give pets for adoption to foreigners, if one dosn’t have PR status. Is that true ?

Instead of adopting, we visited few pet stores in Tokyo, but we were turned away saying ‘no English’. Are there any English friendly pet stores?

We don’t know japanese language, and we are finding it difficult to find the right info and the right place. We would love to have some advice.

  1. Don’t get a puppy or kitten if you don’t know how long you’ll be here. It will be cruel to abandon it if you end up having to leave after a few years.

  2. ARK and Japan Cat Network speak English. you can adopt or foster. if you are going to adopt, please make sure you have a plan for taking your pet when you leave Japan.

honestly i find the pet stores here to be extremely expensive and rather cruel. if you’d really like to purchase an animal, find a good breeder (unlikely to speak English though).
