Hi, I’m planning to go to Osaka and will be using Sanyo-San’in Area Pass, which stated in their website that “Reserved seating tickets (for up to 6 trains) can be reserved” and unlimited usage for non-reserved seats.

So, the question is, if I were to reserve more than 6 times, will I have to pay for the whole reserved seat price or just the different between reserved and non-reserved seat?

And also, how packed is a non-reserved section on Shinkansen and those Limited Express? I’ve used shinkansen plenty of times but always reserved a seat so I don’t know about non-reserved ones. Thank you!

Without knowing date and time of travel, as well as the route – it’s almost impossible to really predict the crowd.
Getting on Nozomi at Hakata or Shin-Osaka will almost always net you a seat in non-reserved section. Kodama outside a busy period is manageable (but also the slowest and should not really be used outside beyond a more localized travel).
Sakura/Mizho should be fairly easy to get into at Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima in the direction of Hakata, but will not have spare seats during peak travel periods in reverse direction.
Outside busy periods, non-reserved cars of limited expresses should net you seats.
