Struggles with the “r” sound

I’ve watched tutorials on it and I know you’re supposed to kinda tap the roof of your mouth, but my Japanese “r” sounds more like an L. I hear tons of Japanese all the time, probably just as much as English so I know what it *should* sound like but I’m having a real hard time replicating it as a white guy
