  1. Hey pal! My biggest advice is finding a local person (in your town, general area) that can practice the language with you. Your ADHD brain is capable of adapting into a situation, it cannot think ahead and lives in the constant present, and your thoughts go wild.

Big piece of advice from someone with adhd: watch japanese movies while watching japanese tiktok while doing 4 or 5 different language learning apps. You might just get bored of japanese and focus on the movie, but even then, you learn japanese!

  2. General advice for beginners is [here](https://reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/w/index?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app)

Regarding the severe ADHD and memory problems, consult a specialist (if you’re not already) and work with them, exploring different methods of learning Japanese that work for you.

My friend has ADHD and using a revised version of the pomodoro technique and spaced repetition works for her. But everyone is different hence why I recommend working with a ADHD specialist about this issue.

  3. If the only reason you are learning Japanese is because you plan to live in Japan someday, the first thing to do is to find out if you are *eligible* to get a visa to live in Japan. If you aren’t, then you can save yourself the work and aggravation of learning the language.

What do you plan to *do* in Japan? Do you meet the requirements for a visa to do that? (You can’t move here freely just because you want to. You need permission from the Japanese government).

  4. I tried for 20 years with no luck. Then I got on Adderall. Now, a year later, I can actually read and understand simple things, and am still making progress.

  5. Make it as fun as possible!!! I love watching video game lets plays of my favorite games in Japanese and just immersing myself in it.

The Japanese word for letsplay is 実況プレイ— type that in with the name of whatever game you like into youtube and boom. You’ll probably find some. Even if you don’t understand a single word, If you like the game enough and know the plot well enough to watch the entire way through you’ll find yourself going “Huh. I wonder if that word means X” and eventually remembering it.

My memory isn’t great personally, but by doing this I’ve learned at least enough Japanese to really enjoy it.

Just no English subtitles! That’s the most important part I think.

Another edit bc i can’t help myself: this video is basically my bible on learning a new language https://youtu.be/J_EQDtpYSNM
