Japan Itinerary – November 9th – Fukuoka, Miyajima, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Tokyo

Hi everyone! I love this subreddit and was looking for some feedback on an upcoming trip for my SO and me.

We are flying into Narita and have a 3 hour layover before flying to Fukuoka. We land at Narita at 3pm and our flight to Fukuoka is at 645pm. Is that enough time to get through customs, grab our luggage, recheck our bags, and make our flight?

11/18 – Shibuya crossing, Shinjuku National Garden
11/19 – imperial palace, National Museum of Modern Art, Hie Shrine
11/20 – explore shimokitazawa,
11/21 – depart

We are going with the 7 day railpass. Does this all seem doable or are we stretching ourselves too thin? Any advice, recommended adjustments, restaurants, izakyas, must sees that we missed would be greatly appreciated. We have a rough idea of what we would like to in each city but insight would be awesome. Can’t wait and thank you for being awesome!

  1. If 3h layover is enough, landed at 6:30 at KIX and my flight to FUK was at 8:10. I just did not had to grab my bag… because it just did not make it to KIX (I had a flight to LAX before), instead I filled the paperwork to get my bag shipped to my hotel (when I got out of the plane, there was someone with a sign with my name, so my luggage was not really lost, just not on the airplane). Of course it always depend how immigration/custom is busy, but should be fine.

12-13 : you know that Hike Mount Misen and Miyajima Ropeway is literally just going on top of the same mountain by two different ways ? Did not think about checking Hiroshima a bit on the second day ?

The Kyoto days, just check a bit around the places you already plan to visit, you can easily add a couple of ideas of things nearby. For example, Yasaka Pagoda is between Sanjusangendo and Gion, and there is a lot between these places, like Kiyomizu-dera, ninenzaka, Kodai-ji, Yasaka-jinja.

For Tokyo, Shinjuku and Shibuya would be well located to reach what you want to see. But there is a lot of places that can be as good for transportation and can offer a different vibe, of course Shinjuku/Shibuya are really busy area in general.

I do not have specific restaurant recommendation, but would suggest to look up some local dish in the different city you plan to visit. It’s easy enough to just open Google Maps and search for restaurant that you don’t HAVE to plan much more and you will still find great food.
