Given everything is spelt the way it sounds in Japanese (as far as I know) Is there anything akin to a spelling bee or a similar contest with Kanji that’s practiced in school?

They sure do, except they test students on their ability to remember how to correctly write kanji.
Kanji knowledge is the equivalent. You can see video of of street quizzes for kanji for uncommon words.
