Hey everyone.
So basically I’ve been waiting for 2 months now and tomorrow my visa will be running out (and so will my health insurance and bank card…) And it gives me a lot of anxiety.
Should i go to immigration and ask about it? It’s my first time waiting for such a long time (before this, i had a 3 year visa and working holiday before that)… So yeah, if someone has similar experiences or/and know what to do please let me know.
Thank you 🙁 <3

Just to exclude the possibility immigration is just really busy. Have you by any chance changed jobs and not notified immigration of 1) leaving the job, within 14 days after you final day and 2) within 14 days after your first day with the new employer?
And also if you have changed jobs, do you consider yourself qualified (on paper) for that job?
If no job change, or if job change following correct process and hold correct qualifications then likely nothing to worry about… they are probably just busy and you get that extra “2 months buffer” (if you see the black stamp at the bottom right of the back of your resident card) it means you have 2 months extra residency.
If you’ve changed jobs, not followed the correct notification process, or potentially working outside the scope of your Certificate of Authorized Employment (I.e a job immigration does not seem you qualified for) then that could possibly why it’s taking longer to review your application.
Best advice is to just ask immigration directly, as we can only really speculate and offer “hypothetical scenarios” based on the information you provide.
Your visa is automatically extended by 3 months when you apply for extension.
If you have the black stamp behind your zairyu card you’re ok.

Are you looking at the printed date on your current residence card? Or have you taken into consideration the additional 2 months (#) extension you get, when you submitted your application to extend your current period of stay, and have received a stamp at the back of your residence card?
If your current resident card expires on Oct 31, 2022, and you have the stamp at the back, you’re ok and should be concerned if you do not get a reply by Dec 30, 2022. You can visit your ward office and show them the stamp on the back to extend your health insurance, and also the validity of your plastic MyNumber card (if you have one) – if you do not extend the validity of your plastic MyNumber card, it will expire and you will need to pay ~1000yen to make a new one when you have your updated residence card.
If the printed date on your current residence card is 01 Sep 2022, and you have the stamp at the back, I would strongly advise you call/visit immigration tomorrow.
(#) There are some who say the stamp extends the validity by only 60 days, and not 2 months. Probably best to err on the side of caution and use the shorter of the 2 to be safe.
I would call and ask about where they are at. I had mine lost in the mail for 2 months (was completed 2 weeks after applying) but never knew it. Call to be sure.
I think it’s best to call them and ask first. No need to spend the time to actually go there to ask.
It is best to give them a call, mostly for your own peace of mind. It is probably they have a bit of a backlog as others have suggested.
They’re examining your porn search history, man.
I have heard immigration are pretty swamped at the moment. The borders reopened and like the rest of us they got very little warning so I imagine they’ve got a huge backlog of new applications to work through.
You should have a stamp on the back of your card stating that your immigration status is under review, this extends the expiry date by 2 months. So don’t worry, you’re not in danger of overstaying! However, maybe give your immigration office a call to let them know you’ve been waiting longer than the maximum estimated processing period (which I believe is 2 months).
