what makes this right vs wrong

The answer I put (which was correct) was “はい、わたしはがくせいです 。”
Would it have been incorrect if I wrote “はい、はたしわがくせいです。”
If so does は have to be 2nd to if there’s a 。at the end

  1. Yes, it would be incorrect. は and わ are not interchangeable. The second は in the first sentence is the subject particle, which is written as は but pronounced わ. Aside from this exception for the subject particle, は will be pronounced “ha” and “wa” will be written as わ.

  2. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what’s going on here. は make the “wa” sound *only* when it’s being used as a topic marker. I don’t quite understand your second question but where は is in a sentence has nothing to do with 。

  3. は is spoken like わ in only a handful of scenarios, most prominently は, as in the subject marker, and こんにちは. All other times, は is spoken like Ha and under no circumstances does わ change its pronunciation.

  4. は is the topic particle and reads “wa” ONLY when it’s used as such. Because of this, you cannot replace わ with は as は normally does not read “wa” anywhere else. Since わ is not the topic particle; you may not use it to replace は when は is acting in such a capacity.
