Does This Itinerary Make Sense?

My soon-to-be wife and I are going to Japan in 2023 from July 5 to July 28 for our honeymoon. She has been once before, mostly to Tokyo, and I’ve never been. Both of us like to be a bit spontaneous when we travel, so the “gaps” in specific activities in the itinerary below kind of reflect that.

But it seems like accommodation is really cheap right now, so we want to take advantage of booking stuff early.

I’m wondering if this itinerary makes sense. Are we cramming too much in? Additionally I recognize this isn’t nearly enough time to really “get” Tokyo, but we are both ok with that for the time being.

7/9: arrive in Narita in the afternoon

7/10-7/13 explore Tokyo

7/14 Take Shinkansen to Kanazawa

7/15-7/16 explore Kanazawa

7/17 Take Shinkansen to Kyoto. Gion Matsuri festival (will transit be super crazy?!?!)

7/18-7/21 Explore Kyoto and Osaka. There’s more Gion Matsuri, the aquarium, Koshien etc.

7/22 Take shinkansen to Tokamatsu. Rent a car and head into Iya valley. Stay at an Onsen

7/23 Stay at Onsen

7/24 Drive back to Tokamatsu, drop off car, and fly to Haneda

7/25-7/27 Explore Tokyo

7/28 Fly out of Narita in the evening.

  1. My input would be that kanazawa is small and I would not suggest more than two days. Everything is relatively close to one another and can be seen relatively quickly like the castle, tea district, ninja museum. The food is really good there tho.

  2. There is no Shinkansen between Kanazawa and Kyoto or between Okayama and Takamatsu, those would be limited express train.
