Can someone explain 能書きはいい to me

So I just started playing video games in Japanese, and in Final Fantasy VII cloud says this to Barret, when he explains what Shinra is doing. I do not understand what it means in this context.

  1. From memory it’s the scene where Barrett is justifying why Avalanche is doing what they’re doing in response to Shinra so the best translation would be “You don’t have to sing your own praises”.

  2. 能書き originally cones from 効能書き, which refers to descriptions of drugs and their effects (効能: effects of medicine, 書き: writing). 能書き then also became used to describe the words of self-advertisement, especially when someone is boasting on and on about them self.
So 能書きはいい, which can be directly translated to “cut out the self-advertisement” is often used when someone tries to salvage their reputation and protect themselves after a mistake by blabbing on and on about how they didn’t do anything bad.
