First request in seven years to save electricity in winter, nationwide by Japanese government decision, December to March next year.

On 1 December, the Government of Japan officially decided to request households and businesses across the country to save electricity during the winter season. The request will run from 1 December to 31 March next year. The minimum required reserve ratio of 3%, which indicates the surplus capacity of electricity supply, is expected to be secured, but in order to ensure a stable supply, cooperation will be sought to the extent that it is reasonable. This will be the first time in seven years, since 2015, that a nationwide request has been made to save electricity in winter.

There are concerns over the stable procurement of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is used as fuel for thermal power generation, against the backdrop of the crisis in Ukraine, and it is difficult to foresee how supply capacity can be secured. If unforeseen circumstances arise, such as power stations being shut down due to a disaster, there is a possibility of a sudden tightening of supply and demand.

The winter supply reserve ratio is expected to be low in January and February next year.

  1. Good luck with that. I don’t see any department store, train company lowering even by 1% their heater. Oh and they won’t cut night advertising either.

Just like in summer no one cared about it.

  2. How about the people request that the government update building codes so that houses have to be built with proper insulation first? Then we could be warmer AND save electricity at the same time! Amazing!
