Bank transfer while abroad (MUFG)

I am in Europe visiting my family and when I try to make a transfer through online banking I get an error message telling me to contact the bank.

It is impossible for me to call Japan right now and I don’t even know the number to call for support in English. After a long time searching the internet I found nothing.

I had already configured the one time password in my MUFG app and I had understood that this was enough.

Can anyone who has been in a similar situation help me? How can I make a transfer?

  1. My partner tried to send a large transfer with his bank and it failed. He had to physically go into the bank and do paperwork to give his account permission to send large transfers. His bank was Japan Post, but I wonder if your situation is something similar.

  2. MUFG has no English support number anyway. You aren’t going to be able to make a transfer from abroad if they already blocked you. Your next transfer you’d probably need to do it through テレ窓口 at a local branch.

  3. MUFG is the worst for this kind of stuff. Literally awful.

What might be easier for you to do is to move money from MUFG into a WISE account, which is now registered in Japan, and then use WISE for whatever business you have

I would also try moving smaller amounts, and trying a VPN from a Japanese IP

  4. WISE. You if you don’t have it, you should. Technically it’s a domestic transfer. You can ask a friend to get the money on their account. Also, since you’re in Europe, get a rechargeable credit card with an IBAN and use it when you are back home.

  5. I was about to say that I live in Europe and literally did an MUFG transfer to my account here today, but I realised that that was through Wise where as far as they’re concerned it’s actually a domestic transfer and they’re none the wiser.

    tl;dr: Wise.
