Getting an International driving Permit with Japanese license

Hey all,

I’m planning to travel back to New Zealand at the end of the year for a trip but I’m going to be using my Japanese license as my NZ one has expired.

Regarding getting the international driving permit (IDP), I know that I need to bring my Japanese license, my passport, the fee, a recent photo and proof of travel. Now, regarding the proof of travel, I’ve got an e-ticket from the airline which I can print but it is completely in English.

Does anyone know whether I need to officially get my e-ticket translated or can I just bring the printed English one?

Thanks!

  1. They looked at my e-ticket because I asked if they wanted to see it. It was in English on my phone, straight off the airline’s email. Not so sure it’s a requirement, but you’ll be fine showing the original (if they ask).

  2. They never asked me any proof of travel, just the expected days abroad. The rest of the requirements are correct, you can take the photo at the machine there too, usually accepts cash only.

  3. Yep, same as the othesr already mentioned, you shouldn’t need proof of travel really, if for some reason they do ask I’m sure you showing them your e-ticket on your phone should be fine. I’ve gone thorugh about 10 of these so far and never once have they asked.
For the photo just make sure you get the correct size, there’s usually a photo booth in the building or nearby that works (in Samezu its on 1F). Process is usually pretty quick – allow 30mins to an hour, as long as there isn’t a big queue of people trying to exchange their foreign licenses (in Samezu at least, it’s the same queue). Also, when you get your NEXT permit they usually ask for your old one and they take it off you, you’re supposed to hand them back once they expire for some reason… However they don’t seem bothered if you don’t have it.
    Have a good trip!
