Should I leave my bank account “asleep” after leaving Japan.

I’m having a JP post (Yuucho) bank account right now, and I’m leaving Japan permanently in a few weeks. I will withdraw all the leftover balance soon before I leave, but there’s the 50k yen support money from the Japanese government that I have applied for a few days ago, and then there’s also a friend who owes me money and plans to transfer to my bank account next month. So the question is, is it ok if I leave my bank account sort of “asleep” to wait for those money to come in, and then ask someone in Japan to withdraw and give them back to me later as cash? I have a cousin living in the same city who is gonna come back to my home country later next year, so that’s what I’m thinking. Has anyone ever done this before, and how difficult it is to cancel an Japanese bank account overseas?

  1. If it’s only going to be a month or two you might be ok. They will automatically close it when your status of residence expires (assuming you’re leaving with some time remaining on that), or when they try to send you some post mail and it bounces due to no longer being at that address.

Once you empty it you don’t need to worry about closing it.

Obviously to do what you want, you’re going to have to give your bankbook/pincode to someone who will do the withdrawal.

Maybe setup the account for withdrawal via transferwise or similar thing if you don’t want to leave your bankbook.
