This upcoming April my husband and I (both 68 and fit)are finally going on our long delayed bucket list trip to Japan. We will be going with a tour group for over two weeks, starting in Tokyo and flying back to the US from Fukuoka. We are pleased with the intensity and the amount of free time available. The one glaring omission is no Mt. Fuji!
Since Japan is now open we plan to correct this by flying in 2 days early. The idea is to fly into HND from EWR which is a 13 hour flight. After arriving around 1:30 pm and allowing 90 minutes to clear immigration, we would drive by hired car to a hotel on Lake Kawaguchi. We should be arriving around 5pm, 18 hours after boarding in Newark.
My question is am I overreaching? I understand we won’t be doing more than collapsing the first evening but we will have a whole day and a half before we leave to meet our group in Tokyo. The only other alternative would be to stay at same hotel in Tokyo and making a day trip.
Opinions ?

I would not want to deal with a 2-hour drive through traffic on the other (British) side of the road after a long flight (even in premium classes of service), it can be a lot
The day trip option is very well documented. I would book an extra two nights in the Tokyo hotel, get up early the next day (this will most likely happen due to jetlag anyway), and head out to Lake Kawaguchi early for a nice day.
