Beautiful quote – want to translate to Japanese for a friend

Hi all, I have a Japanese pen pal whose family has made wonderful pieces of traditional furniture for hundreds of years. I wanted to show him this quote by Marcus Garvey to show my appreciation for his family’s craft:

” “A *people without knowledge* of *their past history*, origin and culture is *like* a *tree without roots*”

How would I translate this into Japanese?

  1. Alternatively, are there any similar quotes by famous Japanese people, or idioms that would have a similar meaning?

  2. 自らの歴史、起源、文化を知らない人々は根のない木のようなものである。
