Vertical or Horizontal? That is the question…

My Google Fu seems to be off tonight. Can anyone point me to a website that can tell me if a recent seismic event was 縦揺れ or 横揺れ please?

Or is that something that is not measured in real time and or is not announced right away?

Thanks ✋🏻

  1. There’s no such thing as vertical or horizontal seismic events. Earthquake motion is rather complex and you can find it in details on JMA website (I can’t point to an exact link because their website is a mess, but I’m sure they have it, since I have seen it).

This information is reported after a while, since every seismic event needs some time to be processed by the computers on JMA side.

The whole vertical and horizontal thing is more of an simplistic way to describe how you felt the shake and usually you feel more vertical punches with the epicentre closer, and more horizontal wave-like motion when it’s far away. It also depends on a myriad of other things.
