home builder says NTT will do internal ethernet wiring?

We are approaching completion of a detached house build and I noticed that coax had been run but not ethernet as discussed. Today we were chatting with one of the company folks (my wife translating as a lot of it is beyond my 5 year old japanese) about it and they \*have\* run conduit to each location but not the actual wiring… he says that NTT will do that and terminate proper jacks at each location (4 runs) once they bring hikari service into the house. This sounds odd to me – is that legit and if so any idea what NTT will charge for it?

Thanks!

  1. Something got lost in translation. If the conduit is there you can run the cable and terminate it yourself, or you can hire someone to do it. NTT will only run the hikari.

Make sure the conduit is actually in place…

  2. That sounds extremely odd, well first of all “NTT” does not do any kinda fiber construction they outsource it to a local contractor depending on the prefecture, the second, said contractor is very unlikely to be aware of these construction requirements or be willing to do it. Their job is to get the line into your building, connect the fiber, do the signal test and leave. You *might* be able to convince them to run the cables for you, but it most certainly will not be free of charge.

The good news is that if you do have the conduit in place, you might be able to DIY it. You can buy spools of ethernet wire and the required crimping heads/tool for cheap, and you can google how to run cables through the conduit.

  3. NTT will run the Hikari cable. Nothing else. Get the builder to wire the place up with Cat6.
