Questions about digital IC cards

I am thinking of using the モビル suika app, but I wanna know if it’s worth the hassle. Is anyone here using it? Can you just use the app to pay at the subway gates? Can you use it to pay at the store?

  1. it gets a bit troublesome if you are a student and would like to benefit from the discounted pass, you would have to re register every year in april through the app/website

apart from that, it’s worth it if you

    1. have a domestic debit/credit card you can top it up with
    2. are always conscious not to let your phone run out of battery
    3. like transaction history of what you’ve paid with the card

yes you can use it at stores or any other terminal that accept suica as payment

  2. I use mine every day. You can use it to pay for anything you would use a regular suica card for – the only exception I have found is that the green car/ limited express ticket machines on the actual train platforms can’t read digital suica cards, only physical ones.

  3. I’m using mobile suica, and top it up with a domestic d-card prepaid via apple pay. Yes it works everywhere a physical suica would work.

You don’t need to use the “app” to pay. You register it as your default card in wallet/nfc/whatever and it will work even with the screen off/phone locked. The app can be used to add a credit card and to show usage history and so on.

  4. I use it along with a regular japanese credit card. Very convenient when topping up and using the green car.

  5. Just FYI as no one has mentioned it yet, but mobile Suica can be charged with cash at any conbini.

  6. Yup, super convenient. Swipe at the turnstiles and head on through, like any pass, except you can recharge with a tap in the app if you’re rushing for your train and forget you only had ¥5 left on the card.

  7. >Is anyone here using it?

Yes, it’s very possible. I don’t though. I use Mobile Pasmo instead.

    >Can you just use the app to pay at the subway gates? Can you use it to pay at the store?

You can use it anywhere you can use the commuter cards.
