How to get a hamster while avoiding pet shops?

Teach me oh Hamster Sensei.
I’ve been looking at adoption sites like jmty.jp but they require you to submit copious amounts of personal information to make an account (why do they need to know the layout of your home?) I am looking in the West Honshu area.

If you can’t imagine the reason for this, then maybe you’re not ready to be responsible for the life of another living creature.

  2. Many people are trying to rehome their unwanted hamsters on places like [satooya boshu](https://satoya-boshu.net/) [ペットのおうち](https://www.pet-home.jp/) and even [jimoty](https://jmty.jp/)

Thank you for not supporting petshops. Many of the hamster mills here are horrific. I’m talking tiny cages, cannibalism, over breeding. I’m involved in animal rescue and I ended up having to take in about 20 hamsters from a collapsed breeder last year. I can’t stress enough how bad the conditions are behind the scenes for pet shop animals in this country. Also, you won’t be able to find a large cage commercially but you can make a large enclosure cheap and easy with Daiso frames or IKEA materials. The ikea cages are easy to google but my DIY Daiso enclosure looks like this.

Edit: just saw your comment about jimoty. Not all of the adopters require that paperwork. Or at least they didn’t last time I used the site. Another idea is to try #ハムスター里親募集 hashtags a on Instagram and Twitter
