Business owners in cities, what methods did you use to build your clientele?

I started a business with my wife in January and although we’re surviving, it’s a struggle at times. What methods did you use to get your name out? Obvious and less common methods (and anything in between) would be great to hear about.

  1. I think it would be helpful to share a general industry or more details. B2B? B2C? Very different approaches required.

  2. For my B2C business I rely heavily on Facebook and Instagram advertising. With their targeting you can really narrow the audience and get good return on investment this way.

  3. I’m not a merchant. I don’t sell anything. My traditional business experience is extremely limited, however:

My in-laws run a vintage store (clothing, imported antiques, etc.) in *Tsukuba,* up in the hills, a considerable distance away from the station or any major thoroughfares.

    And they are considerably successful.

Key appears to be word-of-mouth. And Instagram. Which is the hub of all their online social interactions. Getting customers to post images and discuss recent acquisitions, offerings, etc.

  4. Hard to give much advice without knowing the industry / region / type of work, but as a general rule – do a consistently good job, at a fair market rate. Word of mouth takes longer, but it’s 100% free and will do far, far more over the long run than any sort of advertising ever could.

Second would be, think about the people that would want to use your product / service, and be relentless in thinking abou thow to get in front of those people.
