Mercari Japan evaluation issues

Why do some buyers on Mercari Japan take forever to evaluate and complete the transection? I sold a brand new pair of shoes in original box for merely 1,500yen with the original price of the shoe on Amazon, Rakuten and elsewhere more than 10,000¥. Yet, it’s been 6 days since the buyer received it, he hasn’t evaluated and completed the sale. Mercari will automatically complete the transaction by the 7th days and pay me the money but it’s just terrible that Mercari Japan gives buyers a week ( 7 days ) after receiving an item to complete the transaction for money to be available for the seller! How hard is it to check an item and evaluate that a person needs 7 days to do so! Just my opinion but I think selling on Rakuma site or Yahoo Japan sales corner is much better for sellers as the payment is prompt! I’ve sold over 50 items on Mercari and more than 30 items were either evaluated on day 5 or later after receiving it by buyers. Almost all of these were brand new products with official tags and receipts and cost around 1,000¥ so I feel it’s not good for buyers to be so selfish. It’s just a 1000¥ product and they need 5 or more days to check it…wtf! Is this just how Japanese people operate when buying and selling ( business style )? I also buy on Mercari and evaluate / complete transection within a few minutes of receiving the item!

  1. If you think Rakuma is better, use it instead.

Remember that you have no idea when they actually “received” the item, just when it was delivered. Maybe they’re out of town for work, staying at their girlfriend’s place, etc, and don’t actually see the item until a few days after delivery.
People have stuff going on in their lives, and checking the state of sneakers is not always top priority. Personally I appreciate that there’s plenty of time.

  2. NO. What’s annoying is when sellers hound buyers to review the item or if it has been delivered. Like same day checking up on the package… some of us have lives, jobs, partners/friends/family in other prefectures. I dont come home to my actual home every single night. As long as it’s within the time limit for the review, I see no issue.

  3. You know that until they leave the review it’s still possible to message them right ? I’ve received a message of “how was the product?” As a way to remind me to finish the sale.

  4. 30 slow folks out of 50 is quite a lot. I have done about 150 transactions and Mercari had to close the sale for me just once, a second time it came close. Both times were beginning buyers who seemed to have bought the item then never opened the app again lol. It happens. Vast majority of the time the “etiquette” seems to be to rate the day the item is delivered though.

And then this is just anecdotal, but some of my most annoying buyers (leaving inane comments, haggling, demands about shipping etc) have been for things in the ¥1000-¥1500 range. Cheap stuff attracts cheap folks maybe. You could try raising your prices and see what happens.

  5. I don’t quite get what is the problem.

Indeed, people have lots of things to do in their lives other than evaluating you on mercari.

If you really want them to evaluate faster, just message and ask how are the things.

Besides, it is often the bulk resellers who buy brand stuff on merceri. They buy in bulk, evaluate in bulk and could not care less about how fast you want it. But even outside of the resellers, most people have actually more important stuff to do.

In short, I can see you’re impatient, but that’s how mercari works and the best you can do is to ask to evaluate sooner.

  6. I’ve done about 50 transactions on Mercari (I have like over Y140,000 sitting on there LOL) and I’d say about 3 were ‘slow’. I emailed after a few days and 2 guys were traveling for work. One guy was just slow.

Should also note that -I- was slow to finish a transaction as I was overseas at the time the package was delivered – however, I also emailed the guy right away to say I would finish the transaction over the weekend (about 5 days’ time).

So, yeah – I’d say just accept that not everyone is waiting at home to open up packages straight away; I’d definitely email the buyer.
