Sulfur baths in Tohoku

Hi. This winter, namely January after the end of the year-end/new year holiday, I plan to take a trip to Tohoku (either northern or southern Tohoku) to enjoy a sulfur onsen hot spring. I might go to two of them if there are multiple contenders for the best sulfur onsen. I am not looking for anything particularly luxurious, but would like to stay at a hotel with breakfast and dinner, but I’d also be ok going to a restaurant in the local area if the hotels in a particular area don’t offer meals. I consider snow to be one of my top considerations.
I have looked into Nyuto, Sukayu, Naruko, Takayu, Zao, and Asamushi onsens but the knowledge that one can gain by reading about destinations is limited compared to the knowledge one gains by staying at the destinations. For context, I have been to Aomori city (Aomori Station vicinity), but I haven’t ventured to the rural onsen areas, so I’m unfamiliar with this. I would really appreciate any suggestions about which one you think is best, and why. Thanks a lot!

  1. Sukayu Onsen — halfway up Hakkoda-san — about one hour from Aomori Station via a JR bus.
