I’ve seen some older posts here saying TIU is a pretty meh school, but how meh are we talking about? My partner from the US is thinking of applying, but their grades are average at best. Would that still be possible?
And if there are any current/past students who could give some tips about the essay, that would be great.
They’re thinking of international relations.

If you’ve seen nothing newer since and the only posts you could find from way back when were meh, that should tell you all you need to know.
In general, any University that is not one of the “7 imperial” or the 3 privates “Keio, Waseda, Tokyo Institute Tech” is going to be pretty meh.
Meh might just recognize you as “having a degree” and eligible for shinsotsu hiring, but it wouldn’t be truly indicative of any skills you have nor would it be recognized outside of Japan unless you have some external publications to back it up.
